The City of San José launched a new online tool this week to help homeowners, businesses, and design professionals navigate the permitting process, according to an April 16 announcement. The Building Permit Project Pages are now available at bit.ly/BuildingPermitSJ and offer step-by-step guides for more than 60 types of projects, including kitchen remodels, Accessory Dwelling Units (ADUs), swimming pools, and Electric Vehicle charging stations.

City Manager Jennifer Maguire said, “Providing clear tools that help residents and businesses navigate the permitting process is an important part of how we serve our community. This new resource reflects our commitment to delivering excellent customer service by making City services more accessible and simple. By helping people move through the process with confidence, we are supporting our strategic goals and helping our neighborhoods and local economy thrive.”

Mayor Matt Mahan said, “First impressions matter. San José is a pro-growth city, and that should be felt as soon as someone wants to turn an idea into reality. Our new project-based webpages help homeowners and businesses move through the permitting process faster because our goal should be to help people build — not stand in their way.”

The city reports that its Building Division permit webpage receives over 200,000 visits annually with nearly 18,000 applications or bulletins downloaded each month. Last year alone saw more than 24,700 permits issued alongside initiatives like Pop-Up Permits and Streamlined Restaurant Program designed to speed up approvals.

Christopher Burton, Director of Planning, Building and Code Enforcement said: “Making it easier for applicants to submit complete and accurate applications the first time helps us move permits through review faster. These permit pages are meant to help people get things right at the start so the process works better for applicants, staff and our community overall.”

San José serves various neighborhoods in Santa Clara Valley with several historical districts according to its historical context page. The city also promotes cultural diversity through initiatives such as the Japanese Friendship Garden or Mexican Heritage Plaza as noted on its historical context page.

Historical sites like the San Jose Historical Museum in Kelley Park feature relocated buildings reflecting local heritage according to documentation, while unique replicas such as Statehouse models from 1899 or 1949 further highlight local history as documented.

The city aims “to deliver quality public services and foster a safe vibrant community” for all residents according to its official mission page. Governance includes a mayor elected at large along with eleven council members representing individual districts as outlined by its charter.
